Artist’s Statement
Mary Kocol
Collecting Light
Collecting Light refers to my photographic process. Using the timed exposure technique, light collects inside the camera as it enters through the lens over several minutes of time. The large multi-family houses of Somerville set the stage for the drama within the ordinary. In addition to being documents of an American neighborhood, they are also formal studies of light, space, and color. On a more profound level, Collecting Light refers to the spiritual. I seek to photograph things illuminated, beautiful, and sublime within my midst and to find stillness within a city in motion. Out of the ordinary, something extraordinary emerges.
Mary Kocol’s photographs are among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and Boston’s MFA. Gallery NAGA sells her work in Boston. Currently she works at one of the Harvard libraries photographing special collections and rare books in addition to making art and editorial photography. She has been photographing in Somerville and surrounds since moving here after art school in 1988.
