Artist’s Statement
Laurae Richards
Laurae Richards is a wife and mother of five. She started going to Haiti in 2000, and fell in love with the country and people there. She started painting from her experiences in Haiti and her art captures her love and passion for the people. The paintings evoke strong emotion in people, especially those who have been to Haiti.
Laurae started a nonprofit organization called Servants for Haiti (www.servantsforhaiti.org) to help Haiti’s impoverished children to become leaders in their homes, churches, communities and nation by supplying them with the care they need to survive and thrive. To accomplish this, Servants for Haiti directs their efforts toward providing sponsorship programs for education to children who can’t afford to go to school, and a feeding and medical program for children at an orphanage. Servants for Haiti offered its first full scholarship (2006-07) to a student to go to medical school in Haiti. Laurae has led a number of trips to Haiti, aiding in the construction of a school and church.

Laurae has taken lessons in art over her lifetime. In the later years after finishing a business degree at Gordon College, Wenham, MA, she went on to study art at Rivier College, Nashua, NH, and the Museum of Fine Arts School, Boston, MA. It has only been since 2002 that her art has incorporated images of people. She has won a number of first place awards and has been commissioned to do art work for a collector’s coin. She has appeared in solo shows as well as group exhibits.
Laurae resides in Westford, where she also teaches kindergarten art. For those interested in purchasing a painting, a pricelist is available at the info kiosk in the lobby. Half of all proceeds go back to Haiti, by aiding in sponsorship and helping pay for service trips.
