Monoprints

After looking at monoprints for years, I decided I just had to try it. Once I did, I fell in love with the medium. It has an element of mystery to it that I love. No matter how careful you are to apply the etching ink to the plate, manipulate it with rollers, brushes or tools that make texture and patterns, apply stencils, or over-print, I am always surprised by the outcome. I like the way it takes some control out of my hands.

For the past four years, I've spent five months living in rural Nova Scotia and the rest of the year in the city. I have been intrigued by the tension and differences of city life and country life. Life in a country not my own, with the beautiful landscapes that invoke peace and tranquility, contrast with the hustle, noise and competitiveness of city life. I've thought about the slow dying of industries like fishing in Nova Scotia as well as the building of the new upon the old. Sometimes this means the destruction of the old to make way for the new without regard for historical importance. I've felt the wealth of some and the poverty of others as well as the growing apart of our nation politically; in short, the dichotomy of life as we know it.

Printmaking is a challenging way to communicate. My goal is to work in this medium and grow in my skills, while continuing to enjoy and respect the element of surprise in the constant experimentation. I also hope to always explore the beauties of nature as well as what man can build.
