Artist’s Statement
Mary Kocol
Collecting Light
These three photographs are from my Collecting Light series, an ongoing portfolio of images of urban twilight.
They were made with the ‘timed exposure.’ The camera functions as a darkened box, collecting light as it enters through its lens over several minutes of time. As light moves before the camera on a tripod, it’s recorded onto the film. During a long exposure, the film ‘remembers’ the actions of light moving before it and saves these movements on a single frame, so that they are seen as if they occurred at the same time.
I print these pictures myself using negatives and an enlarger, making exposures onto photographic paper.
