Artist’s Statement

Deb Kennedy

I began drawing and painting as a child with my aunt, a regionally known artist in Toledo, Ohio, and through the Toledo Museum of Art student program. While much of my adult life has been spent in the corporate finance and marketing, and in teaching, I’ve always found time to explore my passion for painting.

I have studied intermittently for the past 20 years with experts in watercolor and oil painting. After leaving my business career, I concentrated on watercolor, studying for 5 years with Andrew Kusmin, past president of the New England Watercolor Society, and in workshops with Paul George and Nancy Howell. Recently, my interests have broadened to landscapes and seascapes in oil.

I find painting to be an act of worship and believe that when we attempt creative pursuits of all kinds we develop an appreciation for the world around us at a deeper level. As a painter, I notice light and shadow, color, shape and all of creation on a daily basis. Musicians hear the richness of sound; cooks taste the subtleties of flavors, gardeners pursue the color and sustenance of the soil. All of us have gifts and talents, and when we play at these things, we notice more of God.
