Artist’s Statement

Anne Hwang

TulipAnne Hwang is an LA transplant who has lived in Somerville for five years. From urban landscapes to close-ups of wilting flowers, Anne pursues beauty in unexpected places. She takes visual inspiration from the use of light in the paintings of Edward Hopper, and thematic inspiration from current films such as Volver and Little Miss Sunshine, which treat subject matter that has potential to be dark or pitiful, but which ultimately show warmth and beauty. In her current photography, Anne has been seeking out the revelation of glory in decay.

Tulip Series

The initial beauty of the living tulips was obvious, but as they decayed, a different, unexpected, kind of beauty exposed itself to the artist. She was captivated by the translucent quality of the aging flowers, and the somewhat paradoxical deepening hue of the petals. "I was interested in seeing these flowers in a new way – lines and textures were coming out, colors were deepening."

Anne shot the tulips in a reused jar with bits of the label still stuck on – the water was murky, the petals were drooping and crumbling – but the colors were still vibrant. In this series, she managed to capture the fragile nature of the flowers in a specific moment in time, and saw an opportunity to show people a kind of beauty they might miss.

In addition to her fine-art work, Anne is an accomplished photographer who delights in documenting celebrations and family life. She has her own business, Anne Hwang Photography, and is currently accepting commissions for weddings and portraiture.
