Artist’s Statement
John Heymann
Photography
When I started taking photographs, I was attracted to light and shadow. Its ambiguity, abstractness, and potential for metaphor quickly engaged my attention. Once I started photographing light and shadow, I naturally found many other worthwhile subjects.
Since the late 1980s I have been working full-time as a commercial, portrait, wedding, Bar and Bat Mitzvah photographer. That experience has given me the opportunity to appreciate color photography and to see it as a medium for creative expression. While working as a photographer, I have made a persistent effort to maintain a balance between professional assignments and fine art photography. At times it has been difficult to maintain that balance but I am convinced that the mix of approaches has helped me become a better photographer.
During this balancing act, I began to articulate a philosophy about photography. I believe that a good photograph offers a personal take or different perspective on life. It wipes clean the viewer’s internal slate, and gives us all a chance to see life freshly. The more able photographers are to articulate their personal experiences, the more universal their images become. In my photos, I use light and shadow, the relationship of shapes and colors to suggest, among other things, an urge to create order in a chaotic environment, a wariness of external threats, and moments of transcendence.
